You come home from the store and realize you forgot to buy a few things. You remember meeting those nice people on vacation in Norway a few years ago, but you absolutely can’t recall their names. These are situations we all experience from time to time and become more common as we age. And that, in itself, doesn’t necessarily have to be concerning. Because an overloaded schedule, stress, fatigue, or simply aging can all contribute to these moments. An important and early symptom of dementia is forgetfulness, but fortunately, not all forgetfulness indicates impending dementia. When forgetfulness becomes more severe and both the individual and their social environment notice it, and when it starts to interfere with daily life, then it might indeed indicate dementia.
